The Desert Song
Keith Michael Roberts, copyright 1976 - .
A million stars in the desert sky,
smiling silently, they pass you by
on their way home,
on your way.
The dreams of a lifetime, they leave you here,
strawberry fantasies and funeral fears
all seem so clear,
then they’re gone . . .
where the wind blows so kindly
on an Indian summer’s night,
wood fire flames take you
on their way to the sky.
A cactus flower in the desert sand,
the dulcimer rings from a lady’s hand
into night song.
As she sings along,
castles of concrete appear in the air,
the face of a young man who once lived there,
seems so clear,
then he’s gone . . .
where the wind blows so kindly
on an Indian summer’s night,
wood fire flames take you
on their way to the sky.
A million stars in the desert sky,
smiling silently, they pass you by
on their way home,
on your way.
